Bellies and separations
Beyond corrosion, sections can settle. Where soil under a run compacts or shifts, the pipe develops a low spot, a belly, where waste sits rather than flowing. Solids accumulate there and the line blocks repeatedly.

How it is actually diagnosed
The tool is a sewer camera. A plumber runs a camera through the lines and records what it sees: scaling, cracks, perforations, bellies, separations, root intrusion and blockages.
The survey is relatively inexpensive compared to what it can reveal, and it is the only way to know the condition of pipe under concrete. Some plumbers also run a hydrostatic test, isolating the drain system and filling it to see whether it holds, which tests whether the system is leaking rather than showing you where.
Get your own survey before a buyer does
This is the practical recommendation and it is worth stating clearly. A camera survey you commission before listing tells you what you are dealing with while you still have options. The same survey commissioned by a buyer's inspector arrives after you have accepted an offer and planned a move.

What the repair actually involves
Spot repair
Where a single section has failed and the rest of the system is sound, that section can be dug out and replaced. This requires breaking the slab at that point, excavating, replacing the pipe, backfilling and re-pouring, then reinstating the floor covering.
Cheapest option and the one most sellers hope for. Whether it is appropriate depends entirely on whether the rest of the system is genuinely sound, which is what the camera survey establishes.
Rerouting
Instead of replacing under the slab, the drain lines are rerouted, frequently overhead through the attic and down through walls, or around the exterior. The old lines under the slab are abandoned in place.
This avoids extensive slab work and involves opening walls and ceilings instead, plus reworking fixture connections. It is not always possible depending on layout, and it is sometimes the cheaper and less disruptive route on a complicated house.
Pipe lining
A resin liner is installed inside the existing pipe and cured in place, creating a new pipe within the old one. Trenchless in the sense that it avoids extensive excavation.
It is not appropriate for every situation. Where the host pipe has collapsed, has significant bellies or has separated at joints, lining may not be viable. It also reduces internal diameter slightly. A plumber who has seen your camera footage can tell you whether it applies.
Full replacement
Where the system is comprehensively degraded, the whole under-slab drain system is replaced. This means tunnelling or extensive slab breaking, and it is the expensive end.
It is also disruptive in a way that matters practically: the house may be difficult to occupy while work proceeds, which affects a seller who is still living there.
What it costs, and why nobody will quote you a figure
The range is genuinely wide and anybody giving you a number without seeing the camera footage is guessing.
Cost is driven by how much of the system is affected, whether the fix is a spot repair or a full replacement, the layout of the house, what the floor covering is, whether tunnelling or slab breaking is used, and how accessible the runs are.
What we would say from what we see: this is routinely a five figure job when it is comprehensive, and that is the figure that matters for a seller, because it is large relative to the value of the sort of house that typically has cast iron under it.
In the older, lower-value parts of Green Country, a comprehensive drain replacement can approach a meaningful fraction of what the finished house is worth. That is the whole problem.
What it does to a sale
Cast iron failure is one of the clearest examples of a defect that does not merely reduce price but removes buyers.
A buyer's inspector recommends a camera survey. The survey shows perforations and bellies. The buyer's lender, seeing an active waste system defect, either requires it addressed before closing or declines. The buyer cannot fund a five figure repair on a house they do not own. The seller frequently cannot either.

Should you fix it first?
Honestly, sometimes. Where the survey shows a localised problem and a spot repair resolves it, doing it and having documentation is usually worth it and removes the obstacle permanently.
Where the survey shows comprehensive degradation, the calculation changes. You are spending a five figure sum on a house whose value may not rise by that amount, and you are doing it under time pressure. In the higher value parts of the metro it frequently works. In Okmulgee or the older parts of Muskogee it frequently does not.
Get the camera footage, get two quotes based on it, and compare the repaired value honestly against what the house achieves as it stands. Our interest is obvious here and the arithmetic is still the arithmetic.
Slowing it down
You cannot stop cast iron corroding and you can avoid accelerating it.
- Keep grease out of the drains. It accumulates on scaled pipe and traps solids
- Do not flush wipes, regardless of packaging
- Avoid harsh chemical drain cleaners as a routine measure. They can accelerate corrosion in already degraded pipe
- Deal with root intrusion properly rather than just cutting it back annually, because roots entering means there is already a breach
- Manage trees near the line, particularly water-seeking species
- Keep the camera footage from any survey. A dated record of condition is worth money at sale and lets you show change over time
