Free legal help
Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma provides free civil legal help to people who qualify, generally on income, and in some circumstances regardless of income, including for people who are elderly or who have experienced abuse. We are not publishing a direct URL, because we could not verify one to the standard this page holds; the Oklahoma Free Legal Answers site linked below lists Legal Aid along with other free services.
They handle civil matters rather than criminal ones, and housing, foreclosure, eviction and probate questions are within the sort of work they do.
On probate timelines. The periods described here are typical rather than guaranteed. How long an estate takes depends on the county, the court's calendar, whether anybody contests it and how complete the paperwork is. This is general information and not legal advice. Oklahoma Free Legal Answers lets you submit a civil legal question and have a volunteer lawyer respond at no cost. It is sponsored by the Oklahoma Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Oklahoma Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission, at oklahoma.freelegalanswers.org.
The Oklahoma Bar Association publishes free informational material on legal topics including home buying, bankruptcy, divorce, small claims and the rights and duties of tenants.
When free help is the right first call
We say this on a great many pages and it is worth collecting in one place. These are the situations where advice costs nothing and changes the outcome:
Behind on the mortgage. Free foreclosure help exists and it comes before any conversation about selling. Our article on free foreclosure help in Oklahoma covers it.

Who actually qualifies, and what each service gives you
These three are the routes most Oklahoma property owners will use, and they have different tests and different limits. Everything below was checked on 7 October 2026 from the organisations' own published information. Numbers, hours and eligibility rules change, so confirm the current position with the service itself rather than relying on this page.
Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma. Statewide, free, for civil matters.
- Intake: 1-888-534-5243
- A separate line for people aged 60 or over: 1-855-488-6814, toll free
- Intake hours are published as Monday to Thursday, 9am to noon and 1pm to 4pm, and the Tulsa office states that voicemails cannot be returned, so ring inside those hours rather than leaving a message
- Income test: at or below 125 per cent of the federal poverty level
- Not entirely cost free: clients are responsible for court costs and service fees

Oklahoma Free Legal Answers. An online brief-advice service staffed by volunteer lawyers. Useful for a specific question rather than for a case.
- Income test: household income under 250 per cent of the federal poverty level, which is a wider door than Legal Aid's
- Asset test: no more than 5,000 dollars in liquid assets
- Limit: three questions a year, on different topics
- Civil only. No criminal matters, and not available to anybody who is incarcerated
- What you get: brief advice and counsel through the website, usually within about three days, with the ability to follow up with the lawyer who answered. No court representation, and no guarantee a question gets answered. A question left unanswered after 30 days is closed and referred elsewhere

Tulsa County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service. Not free, and worth knowing about precisely because there is no income test.
- Telephone: 918-587-6014, staffed 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, with occasional early Friday closures and courthouse holidays
- Cost: published as 25 dollars, which gets up to 30 minutes of telephone consultation with an attorney practising in that area of law
- Scope: referrals only to lawyers who subscribe to the service and practise in Tulsa County
- If you then hire them, the fee is whatever you and the attorney agree

Which to use for which situation. If a court deadline is running or papers have been served, ring Legal Aid today and do not wait. If you need one specific question answered and nothing is on fire, Free Legal Answers is the lower effort route. If your income is above both thresholds, 25 dollars for half an hour with a lawyer in the right field is better value than anything else on this page.
Getting the most out of half an hour
Free and low cost help is rationed by time rather than by goodwill. Thirty minutes with somebody who knows the answer is a great deal of value, and most people waste the first fifteen of it on background nobody needed.
Before the call:
- Write your question in one sentence. Not the story. The question. "My mother died in 2019, the house is still in her name, and I want to sell it: what do I have to do first?" is a usable question
- Write the timeline on one page, dates only, in order. Dates are what lawyers work from and they are the thing people get wrong when they tell the story out loud
- Gather the documents and have them in front of you, not in a drawer: the deed, any court papers, the mortgage statement, the tax statement, the notice, the letter. Our page on getting a Tulsa County deed copy covers the one most people cannot find
- Know the deadline, if there is one, and say it in the first minute. A date changes the advice
- Write down the names of everybody with an interest: co-owners, heirs, lienholders, the other side
During the call, ask these four things:
- What is the deadline I need to worry about, and what happens if I miss it
- What is the one next step I should take this week
- Is this something I can do myself, and if so where does the form come from. Our page on Oklahoma property forms and filings covers where things get filed
- If I cannot do it myself, what would it cost to have somebody do just that one piece. Many lawyers will take a single defined task rather than a whole case, and people do not ask
And afterwards: write the answer down the same day while you still remember the wording, and do the one next step before the week ends. The commonest outcome of free legal advice is that somebody gets a clear answer and then does nothing with it for four months, by which point the advice has expired along with the deadline.
What free help will not do
Being honest about the limits saves disappointment.
Legal Aid has eligibility criteria and capacity limits, and it does not take every case. Free legal answers is a question and answer service rather than representation. A regulator investigates conduct against its own rules; it does not recover your money or unwind your transaction.
Where the amounts are significant, a private attorney is frequently the cheaper outcome. That is true of contested probate, boundary disputes, contract for deed problems and anything involving a forged instrument.
Our own position, stated plainly
We buy houses, and almost every page on this site tells somebody not to sell to us where an ordinary sale would net them more.
This page exists because the same is true of advice. A great many people who land here need a phone call to Legal Aid or a regulator far more than they need an offer from us, and we would rather publish the list than have them not know it exists.
