Free legal help

Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma provides free civil legal help to people who qualify, generally on income, and in some circumstances regardless of income, including for people who are elderly or who have experienced abuse. We are not publishing a direct URL, because we could not verify one to the standard this page holds; the Oklahoma Free Legal Answers site linked below lists Legal Aid along with other free services.

They handle civil matters rather than criminal ones, and housing, foreclosure, eviction and probate questions are within the sort of work they do.

Oklahoma Free Legal Answers lets you submit a civil legal question and have a volunteer lawyer respond at no cost. It is sponsored by the Oklahoma Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Oklahoma Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission, at oklahoma.freelegalanswers.org.

The Oklahoma Bar Association publishes free informational material on legal topics including home buying, bankruptcy, divorce, small claims and the rights and duties of tenants.

When free help is the right first call

We say this on a great many pages and it is worth collecting in one place. These are the situations where advice costs nothing and changes the outcome:

What free help will not do

Being honest about the limits saves disappointment.

Legal Aid has eligibility criteria and capacity limits, and it does not take every case. Free legal answers is a question and answer service rather than representation. A regulator investigates conduct against its own rules; it does not recover your money or unwind your transaction.

Where the amounts are significant, a private attorney is frequently the cheaper outcome. That is true of contested probate, boundary disputes, contract for deed problems and anything involving a forged instrument.

Our own position, stated plainly

We buy houses, and almost every page on this site tells somebody not to sell to us where an ordinary sale would net them more.

This page exists because the same is true of advice. A great many people who land here need a phone call to Legal Aid or a regulator far more than they need an offer from us, and we would rather publish the list than have them not know it exists.
